Column for October 14, 2004

I am over 40, have never run in a marathon and not planning on running in one anytime soon. I think a lot of people over 40 wonder if they could run a marathon or how far they could run if they really had to.

I also think most people, who wonder how far they could run, probable could not go very far. Most people probably could not walk a 27 mile marathon let alone run it. Which of course doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Maybe start by walking around the block. That goes for all the young good looking people too.

Don't wait till you get old and out of shape to exercise. If you do regular exercise you might put off getting old and out of shape all together.

You can see a free Benny and the Jets band concert during the Detroit Marathon Sunday, October 24 in Detroit's historic Indian Village 3030 Seminal Street.

Get there early, dress warm, cheer on the runners, tailgate, rock and roll and think young.

Must be a good time of year for movies. I recently wrote about Farmington Hills alumni Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta starring in a new movie called "Ladder 49" and a couple of other movies catch my attention. One a movie called "the Motorcycle Diaries" and a high school football movie called "Friday Night Lights" which I am sure every high school kid will want to see. Though I haven't seen these movies yet "Diaries" has a 4 star rating and "Lights" is said to be one of the best sports movies of all time.

I heard from local drummer Harry Rodman who says his new band, The Bluescasters play a variety of blues styles as well as Memphis style soul and R&B material. They will be performing Friday, October 15 at the Northfield Roadhouse. The Northfield Roadhouse is located on North Territorial Rd, just west of US-23 at the corner of Whitmore Lake Rd. They will also be participating in the Detroit Blues Society Motor City Blues Challenge on Tuesday, October 19 at the Tenny Street Roadhouse in Dearborn.

The bands start at 8pm. A number of top Detroit area blues bands will be performing at various locations throughout October and November with the finals culminating on Sunday, November 28 at Tenny Street Roadhouse. The winner moves on to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. For more information regarding the Blues Challenge see www.dbsblues.com. You can also visit The
Bluescasters on the web at www.thebluescasters.com.
